In Part 1, we will take a look at a framework to guide the gathering of information. We will cover six external economic forces that could impact your business. These include social/political, technical, demographics, and government forces. Then we will discuss five dimensions within your market that include the supply chain, competitors, complementers, and substitutes. You will get examples and templates of ways you can summarize your findings for your investment presentations and your Due Diligence Play Book. We will also tie in customer value data and then finish up with a detailed case history where these techniques were employed in the development of an actual business startup.

Part 2 brings together the information you learn how to gather in part one and gives you guidelines to analyze the information and form your strategy. The topics we will cover include for the first time, our take on Values, Vision and Mission Statements. We will study how to evaluate company resources and funding sources and we will look at techniques like SWOT Analysis, Critical Success Factors and Scenario Planning and we will follow up on the case history we started in Part 1.

Part 3 We are pleased and blessed to have Karmen Crowther who is the Business Librarian at the University of Tennessee. Karmen will demonstrate a host of online databases where you can find much of the information you will be looking for as part of this process. That session will be held at the new Training Center which is part of the technology business incubator on campus at UT. While there, you will have the use of a laptop computer and you will have the chance to research your own business information with the help of an expert.
