Senator Jamie Woodson was elected in 2004 after serving six years in the State House of Representatives. Since that time, she has served as Chairman of the Senate Education Committee and Co-Chair of the Select Oversight Education Committee. In 2009, she was selected as the Senate Speaker Pro Tempore which is the Number 2 position in the Tennessee State of Senate.
Speaker Pro Tempore Woodson has been a leader in education reform during her time in the General Assembly advocating for improved educational outcomes, enhanced K-12 school funding, higher academic standards and public charter schools. This January, she was a key leader in the passage of Tennessee's landmark "First to the Top" legislation. This legislation became a center piece of Tennessee's winning "Race to the Top" application. Last March, Woodson received bi-partisan recognition for her reform efforts when Governor Phil Bredesen selected her to be one of the five member team presenting Tennessee's "Race to the Top" application in Washington. Recently, Governor Bredesen also named Woodson to the "First to the Top Council", a group of 14 key education leaders who will provide strategic guidance to policymakers in order to ensure the state is effectively implementing, evaluating and learning from the state's historic "Race to the Top" investment.
